The International Puppets Festival called The Days of Puppets was held in Burgas for the first time in August 2014 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of State Puppet Theatre of Burgas.
The festival has become an annual event and is not competitive in character. The audience has a completely free access to all the plays which are performed on the open-air stage in the Sea Garden Park. The times of the performances and the attending events conform to the nature of the audiences at that time of the year. The town of Burgas is a large tourist centre and the cool of the evening hours is the most appropriate time for people to enjoy the performances every evening at 6:30, 7:30 and 8.30 in the course of 7days throughout the whole first week of August.
The programme of the festival usually includes four foreign and seven Bulgarian theatrical companies and each company plays two performances on two different days.
By tradition State Puppet Theatre of Burgas opens the festival with their own performance and on the last day of the festival the Parade of Kites is held.
The major factor in the selection of the participants is the entire vision of the festival to enable the audience to get acquainted with various puppets and various kinds of puppet theatre played in different countries. The main requirement for the performances is that they should be played on an open-air stage.
The organizers of the festival provide highly qualified technical staff, professionally operated sound and lighting system, a stage – 5m wide, 4m long and 3m high, black stage dressing (wings and back), a dressing room, a room for storing up scenery and puppets.
The organizer of the festival pay for the performances, food expenses and accommodation of the participants as well as part of or all travel expenses of the foreign companies (plane tickets or fuel consumption).
Each company receives a small sculpture and an honorary diploma.
